Shahid Khaqan sees elections on time

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said on Friday the elections would be held on time without any delay.
Speaking to the media, Mr Abbasi was expressing his views in connection with the elections, saying, “Whoever was made party in the case could raise objections. The Supreme Court has taken action over the matter.”
To clear the air on election participation, Mr Abbasi stated, “Whenever elections occur, I will run on the ticket of the PML-N.”
Earlier today, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said it was the right of the parliamentarians to raise voice when judges intrude into their domain.
The PML-N stalwart was addressing a session of the National Assembly at a time when a nine-member bench of the Supreme Court has taken a suo motu notice over delay in elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where assemblies were dissolved by the PTI in January.
He said the apex court had taken up an important matter and now it needed to find a solution that would prove an antidote “not only to us but for the issues we are facing for decades”.
He also prayed the top court to constitute a full bench to hear the suo-motu notice as it was a very important issue.
He said there were several important questions before the judiciary, including the dissolution of the provincial assemblies, and the answers should come.
“We have always stood for the independence of the judiciary as we want to run the country in accordance with the law and constitution,” he stressed.
He said there was need to thing about that some of the judges were criticised while others were not. He said people criticised retired Justice Munir, retired Justice Irshad Hassan Khan, former chief justice Saqib Nisar and former SC judge Asif Saeed Khosa but no one raised fingers on retired Justice Saeeduzzaman Siddiqui and Justice Nasirul Mulk.
He said the apex court had re-written the Section 63-A of the Constitution despite the fact that it was not its domain. He said, “We are directly facing its repercussion today”. He said former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was disqualified for life by courts, saying he was unable to find any instance wherein an institution had disqualified as person of the other institution.
Khawaja Asif also slammed the previous government of the PTI, regretting that they backtracked from its agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He said, “We have inherited an economic crisis and the mess of past four years cannot be cleared in a matter of eight or nine months”.
He said we are fully cognizant of the problems faced by the common man, but it will take time to put the economy back on track.
The Defence Minister also voiced concern over acts of terrorism in the country. He described his recent talks with Afghan authorities in Kabul as positive. He also lashed out at Imran Khan for resettlement of TTP militants in Pakistan.

IHC directs Adiala Jail authorities to present Imran Khan’s power of attorney

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has instructed Adiala Jail authorities to obtain and submit former prime minister Imran Khan’s signed power of attorney in court.
Justice Inaam Ameen Minhas heard a contempt of court petition regarding the non-provision of power of attorney and denial of meetings with Imran Khan. Lawyer Shoaib Shaheen appeared personally, while a representative from Adiala Jail also attended the hearing.
During the proceedings, Shoaib Shaheen argued that over 200 cases were pending, and without signed power of attorney, they could not proceed with legal matters. When questioned, the Adiala Jail representative stated that they had no such documents in their possession.
Shaheen informed the court that the jail superintendent had previously contacted him, stating they could now process the documents. However, despite multiple visits and follow-ups, the signed documents were never returned.
Justice Minhas directed the lawyer to resubmit the documents, instructing the jail authorities to return them by the next day. The court also ordered Adiala Jail officials to submit a report regarding the matter.
The hearing was adjourned until tomorrow (Wednesday).

Karachi Airport suicide attack case: Police submit charge sheet in court

Police have submitted the charge sheet in court regarding the suicide attack on foreign nationals near Jinnah International Airport.
During the hearing at the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Karachi, police presented the charge sheet, naming Bashir Ahmed, Abdul Rehman alias Rahma Gul, and Siraj Bhattar alias Danish Mafroor, while two suspects, Muhammad Javed and Gul Nisa, have been arrested.
The incident occurred on October 6, 2024, at 11 PM, when a blast took place in front of the Civil Aviation guard room near the airport.
Two Chinese nationals were killed in the explosion, and their bodies were found near a coaster. The banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) Majeed Brigade claimed responsibility for the attack via social media.
According to the charge sheet, the attackers allegedly received support from a foreign enemy intelligence agency, with the objective of harming Pakistan-China relations. The suicide attack was intended to destabilise the country, damage its economy, and serve financial interests.
The charge sheet further stated that the attack aimed to spread fear, lower the morale of security agencies, and cause public terror. The explosion resulted in the deaths of two Chinese nationals and left 10 others injured.
The police report highlighted that suspect Javed facilitated the attack by visiting the crime scene with other accused, while suspect Gul Nisa helped the suicide bomber enter Karachi.
