The 23rd death anniversary of dramatist, playwright and short story writer Mirza Adeeb is being observed today.
His birth name was Dilawer Hussain but he got the fame in literary world as Mirza Adeeb.
He was born on April 4, 1914, in Lahore to Mirza Basheer Ali.
Mirza Adeeb wrote plays and short stories in Urdu and Punjabi language which won him six prizes and awards from the Pakistan Writers’ Guild.
In the beginning, he made poetry his device but later developed his interest in playwriting.
Initially, he wrote romantic prose but later switched to writing plays about everyday events focusing more on social problems.
He had begun writing one-act dramas, which made them easier to broadcast over radio and television.
When he affiliated himself with Radio Pakistan, many of his plays were broadcast and they gained popularity among the masses.
He is listed as a prominent Urdu playwright of the modern era. He also wrote critical essays and commentaries on books, besides writing columns in newspapers.
He was given Presidential Award for playwriting in 1969, Pride of Performance Award for literature in 1981 and his play, Pas-e Pardah won him the Adamji Adabi Award.
Mirza Adeeb died on July 31, 1999.
