Verdict reserved in Ramzan Sugar Mill transfer case

An accountability court in Lahore on Thursday reserved verdict in Ramzan Sugar Mill transfer case against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz.

Justice Zubair Shehzad Kiyani of accountability court conducted hearing of the case. PM’s counsel Anwaar Hussain appeared in front of the court.

During the hearing, court also accepted Hamza Shehbaz’s request for exemption from hearing.

The NAB prosecutor pleaded that case be transferred to the anti-corruption court while dispelling impression that the NAB had any objection to transfer of the case.

Later, the court reserved the verdict.

SC disposes of pleas against proposed constitutional amendment

The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) on Thursday disposed of pleas against proposed constitutional amendment due to eleventh hour withdrawal by senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawyer Hamid Khan.

A three-member bench led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa disposed of joint pleas filed by Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Abid Zuberi and other applicants.

Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan were also part of the bench.

It must be noted that six members of Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) along with Balochistan Bar Council (BPC) had approached the apex court against proposed constitutional amendment.

Judgment reserved on Sarim Burney's bail plea in child trafficking case

Karachi’s local court has reserved the judgment on the bail plea of Sarim Burney against a case of child trafficking and forged documentation.

The hearing was held on Sarim Burney’s bail plea in a case against him today.

During the hearing, Sarim Burney’s lawyer informed the court that his client was arrested at Karachi Airport on his return from the USA.

Lawyer contended that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) was opting for delay tactics in the trial.

The investigation officer hadn’t submitted the case challan despite the passage of five months, he added. Defence lawyer disclosed that the children who were alleged to be trafficked had been living in Karachi.

The defence lawyer requested the court to acquit Sarim Burney as he was deserving to be freed.

Consequently, the court reserved the verdict on the bail plea of Sarim Burney in the child trafficking and forged documentation case.

CHARGES AGAINST SARIM BURNEY

FIA took social activist and entrepreneur Sarim Burney into custody from the Karachi airport on June 5.

According to sources in the FIA, Burney was arrested by a team from the FIA Anti-Human Trafficking Wing following a human trafficking complaint received from the US government.

It is alleged that Sarim Burney, the founder and chairman of a non-profitable organisation Sarim Burney Welfare Trust, was involved in illegal adoption practices, including human trafficking, spanning across the United States, Canada and other countries.

Empowering underprivileged will strengthen society, asserts Maryam Nawaz

Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz asserted that a society could only be strengthened with the empowerment of underprivileged and disadvantaged.

Sharing her message on the International Day for Reduction of Poverty, Maryam stated that poverty wasn’t only an economic challenge but its result of inequality in education, health and justice.

She pledged for eradication of poverty through social justice and economic development taking office of CM, Maryam Nawaz highlighted.

She recalled the projects launched for eradication of poverty including Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar, for the homeless, Kissan Package worth Rs 4 billion for farmers and Himmat Card for special persons.

CM Maryam revealed that skills and economic opportunities programs and other innovative measures were being taken as well as women were being empowered financially to reduce unemployment and poverty.

She took concrete measures for reduction of inflation and rates of necessary items, Maryam Nawaz emphasised.
Punjab CM stressed that mutual responsibility and effort was needed for reduction of poverty.

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is being observed today.

This year the theme of the day is “Ending Social and Institutional Maltreatment Acting together for just, peaceful and inclusive societies”.
