Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal has said the country now needs a long march of economic development, not political. Speaking at the Master’s Degree Show 2024 ceremony of the National College of Arts, the federal minister said the PML-N government wanted peace and political stability in the country. “The dialogue between PTI and the government can yield good results. There will be zero tolerance for terrorism and it will be defeated at all costs. If there is any interference in the country from anywhere, the army is capable of giving a full response. Afghan soil should not be used for terrorism,” he added. He believes in political dialogue and said positive results can be obtained from talks with PTI. He said the soil of Afghanistan should not be used against Pakistan. He reiterated his commitment to ending terrorism. “There will be zero tolerance for terrorism in the Apex Committee meeting. Terrorism will be dealt with like it was dealt with in 2013. Terrorism will be defeated. If there is interference from anywhere in the country, the army is capable of giving a full response and will bring peace back through sacrifices and struggle,” the minister went on saying. He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had laid the foundation of a four-year Uraan Pakistan initiative. After training the youth in other fields including skill development, the government will make them a force to reckon with.

The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad has approved bail for the additional 40 individuals arrested in connection with the November 26 protests. Presiding Judge Abu Al-Hassnat Muhammad Zulqurnain granted bail to the accused against surety bonds of Rs5,000 each, considering their immediate release. During the proceedings, the PTI workers were represented by lawyers Saradr Masroof , Ansar Kiani, Amna Ali, Mirza Asim Baig, and Murtza Toori. Notably, the court had approved bail for 250 accused the previous day, while rejecting 150 bail applications. The cases stem from protests orgnised on Novembers 26, where multiple protestors were charged under anti-terrorism laws.

GlobalFoundries (GFS.O) and IBM (IBM.N) said on Thursday they have settled dueling lawsuits in which GlobalFoundries was accused of breaching a contract with IBM and the computer giant was alleged to have misused the chipmaker's trade secrets. The companies said in a joint statement the terms of the settlement were confidential and would allow them to "explore new opportunities for collaboration." GlobalFoundries bought IBM's semiconductor plants in 2015. IBM sued the Malta, N.Y.-based company in New York state court in 2021 for allegedly breaking a $1.5 billion contract to make high-performance chips for IBM. GlobalFoundries, which is majority owned by Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth fund Mubadala, separately sued Armonk, New York-based IBM in New York federal court in 2023 for allegedly misappropriating its chipmaking trade secrets and sharing them with Intel (INTC.O) and Japanese consortium Rapidus during partnerships with the two companies. An Intel spokesperson declined to comment on the settlement. Spokespeople for Rapidus did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The U.S. Commerce Department awarded GlobalFoundries a $1.5 billion subsidy in November to expand its semiconductor production in New York and Vermont.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) confirmed on Friday damage to an international submarine cable which has led to internet disruptions in Pakistan. “Teams are working diligently to resolve the matter as soon as possible. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused during this time," the PTCL said. The internet slowdown issue persists in Pakistan and freelancers or those associated with works of similar nature bear the brunt of the situation. A day earlier, the PTA said internet and broadband users might face disruptions as submarine cable AAE-1 near Qatar developed a fault. In a press release, the PTA said the fault was reported in the AAe-1 submarine cable located near Qatar, which is one of the seven cables handling Pakistan’s international Internet traffic. “Due to this Internet and broadband users may face problems,” the PTA said. The PTA said its teams were working on fixing the problem. “PTA is monitoring the situation and will keep telecom users informed from time to time,” the statement added. Pakistan has reported faults in undersea Internet cables in the past as well. Internet disruptions over the past few months have affected millions of Pakistani users, adversely affecting businesses and drawing nationwide complaints Pakistan has 110 million Internet users, and up to 40 percent slower Internet speeds have affected nearly half of the population. Digital rights experts, however, have cast doubts on the government’s statement about Internet disruptions in the past. Instead, they say, point out the government’s move to install a firewall to monitor and regulate content.
