Polling ends, vote count underway in NA-193 Rajanpur by-election

Vote count began after polling ended in the National Assembly constituency NA-193 Rajanpur amid strict security.

Polling began at 8am and continued till 5pm without any break. The seat fell vacant due to the death of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) member Jaffar Khan Leghari. He died in Lahore on December 31, 2022, after a prolonged illness.

Election Commission

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has set up 237 polling stations in the constituency out of which 68 have been declared sensitive. At least 2,650 police personnel have been deployed to deal with any untoward situation while Pakistan Army and Rangers personnel are also patrolling the area.

Candidates

11 candidates are contesting NA-193 Rajanpur by-poll, but the main contest is expected between the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Emaar Owais Leghari and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Mohsin Leghari.

On Friday, Punjab’s caretaker government approached the ECP with a written request to postpone the by-election citing security concerns.

Earlier, Commissioner Dera Ghazi Khan Division Khalid Manzoor mentioned the security concerns in his letter to the caretaker provincial government.

But, the electoral watchdog on Saturday dismissed these concerns on the grounds that adequate security measures were being taken by the Punjab Police and Rangers for the provision of security at all the polling stations.

ECP’s Central Control Room starts monitoring Rajanpur by-polls 

A Central Control Room set up at Election Commission Secretariat Islamabad has started monitoring by polls being held in NA 193, Rajanpur on Sunday.

A spokesman of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) said in a statement on Sunday that the Control Room would continue working till receipt of the last result.

Senior officers were monitoring the electioneering process from the Control Room, Islamabad. Separate Control Rooms established at Lahore and Rajanpur have also started registering complaints of election process. Immediate action would be taken against election code violators.

The spokesman said that polling related complaints could be lodged round the clock on telephone no 051-9204402; 051-9204403; 051-9210837 and 051-9210838 and the complaints could also be faxed to the Control Room on 051-9204404.

Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi said on Tuesday that governor’s rule was not being imposed in the province.

Talking to media after visiting the Mazar-e-Quaid in Karachi, Kundi said he would try to become voice of the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhw. “I will fight the case of people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Islamabad,” he said.

The KP governor said he would like to distribute love instead of spreading hatred among people. Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa said, “Everyone in Pakistan is a free citizen, there is a Constitution and law in Pakistan.”

“If the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa marches on Islamabad, he will go to somewhere else. Such a stand should not be adopted to hide one’s incompetence and negligence,” said Kundi.

He said the KP chief minister had a clear majority, so why he was afraid of convening the assembly session.

“You cannot take your right by taking to streets. I will strengthen the case of my province. I am ready to go to every political figure in the province for that purpose,” Kundi added.

He said serious people should come forward and hold negotiations. Kundi said he would not give tough time to provincial government.

Ministry withdraws notification removing Shaukat Siddiqui as IHC judge

The Law Ministry has withdrawn its notification of October 11, 2018 regarding the removal of Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui, a former judge of the Islamabad High Court, in view of the Supreme Court judgment of March 22.

In a notification issued on Tuesday, the ministry stated that the president was pleased to retire Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui on attaining the age of superannuation with effect from June 30, 2021.

A five-member bench, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, completed hearing on the constitutional petitions filed by Shaukat Siddiqui on Jan 23.

In its judgment handed down on March 22, the court struck down the Supreme Judicial Council’s ruling that removed the judge.

Nawaz Sharif files plea for acquittal in Toshakhana reference

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday filed a petition with an accountability court seeking acquittal in a reference regarding the acquisition of a vehicle from Toshakhana.

Accountability court judge Nasir Javed Rana presided over the hearing on the Toshakhana vehicle reference against President Asif Ali Zardari and former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Advocate Arshad Tabraiz appeared before the court on behalf of President Zardari, while PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif was represented by advocate Rana Muhammad Irfan, who filed an acquittal plea in the reference on behalf of his client.

During the hearing, judge Nasir Rana remarked that notices were issued to the parties on the plea of acquittal. Upon this, the NAB prosecutor said that he would send the petition for acquittal to the NAB headquarters, requesting a short notice.

The court has called arguments on Nawaz Sharif’s acquittal plea on May 23.

During the hearing, a request for exemption from attendance was filed by former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, the court accepted the request.

Lawyer Arshad Tabraiz told the court that President Zardari enjoyed presidential immunity, arguing that the case could not be proceeded.

The accountability court adjourned the hearing on the reference related to Toshahhana vehicles till June 3.

On April 17, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) gave a clean chit to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the reference related to Toshakhana vehicles.
