Six kidnapped and murdered in North Waziristan

Six people were killed by unidentified armed men in Mir Ali – a town in North Waziristan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – as the province wrestles with worsening law and order situation due to the rising terrorism at a time when the much-awaited countrywide elections are just over a month away.

Mir Ali is located 12 kilometres east of Miran Shah, the district headquarters, and 40 kilometres west of Bannu. The erstwhile tribal region is now part of Bannu Division.

Police say the victims were from Punjab and ran barber shops in the local bazaar, adding that they were abducted a day earlier and their bodies had been recovered on Tuesday from a nearby area.

The increase in terrorism acts –  including attacks on military and police as well as targeted killings – are on the rise in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, especially the former tribal belt. However, the region around Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan has been worst affected.

In this scenario, running election campaign has become a huge challenge to certain political parties – JUI-F, ANP, PML-N and PPP – which are known target of terrorist groups.

That’s why JUI-F emir Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who was attacked earlier near Dera Ismail Khan, on Monday called for postponement of the Feb 8 polls because of the poor law and order situation.

His party leaders and members have been attacked multiple times in the past, while the ANP lost over 300 workers during the 2008-13 period despite being ruling the province at that time.

The ANP provincial chief, Aimal Wali Khan, along with Fazl, is reportedly facing serious threat, as they believe that the PTI clinched power in the province in 2013 and 2018 after others were not allowed to run election campaign.

Last year, the PTI founder had admitted in public that he as prime minister ensured resettling of Taliban and their families in the erstwhile tribal region as part of the so-called peace talks. Since then, the province has been experiencing a return of terrorism scourge.

Punjab police need reforms, donning uniforms doesn't solve problems: Gandapur

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur said on Wednesday that Punjab police needed reforms, problems could not be solved by just donning police uniforms.

Ali Amin Gandapur, while talking to Dunya News, said, “If I pinpoint something, everyone starts criticising me. Everyone knows what was economic and employment situation when the PTI government was in power and how PDM performed in its previous and present regime?”

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister said mere lip service did not work. Similarly, making tiktok videos could not help resolve masses’ issues.

The Punjab police remained instrumental in the worst poll rigging during General Elections 2024. Punjab police direly needed to be reformed, he said.

Maryam launches field hospitals project, bringing healthcare to people's doorsteps

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched the field hospitals project with the aim of delivering healthcare facilities directly to the doorsteps of the people.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Lahore on Wednesday, the chief minister expressed satisfaction that the dream she shared with former prime minister Nawaz Sharif of bringing healthcare to people’s doorsteps had been realised.

Maryam announced the establishment of 32 field hospitals across the province, with the first one being established in Bahawalpur. She said that these hospitals would particularly serve villages and remote areas lacking access to healthcare facilities.

Regarding the facilities offered at the field hospitals, Maryam highlighted that these would include outpatient departments (OPDs), immunisation services for newborns, maternity services, surgical facilities and the availability of lady health workers.

The CM affirmed her government’s commitment to ensuring the provision and availability of health-related services throughout the province, stating that numerous field hospitals had been established within six months since she assumed office in Punjab.

In an indirect reference to the use of containers by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Maryam remarked that previously, containers were solely employed for inciting violence, arson and tearing up utility bills. However, she added, from now on, containers would be repurposed as platforms for delivering medical aid to the people.

CM Maryam urged critics of her initiatives, particularly those scrutinising her videos, to actively engage in public service. She credited the inception of the field hospitals project to Nawaz Sharif’s visionary leadership, expressing her commitment to following in his footsteps.
